TORONTO, Ontario

Shockwaves reverberated across social media this weekend after it was announced that the Toronto Transit Commission would be awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for freezing its adult fare price at 3.25 instead of raising it by 20 cents to 3.45, as contemplated by the Commission earlier this year.

“This is an historic day for our city, for all of us” a beaming Toronto Mayor John Tory announced during his afternoon press conference on Friday.

“It wasn’t easy – so much behind the scenes work went into this decision, but in the end, we did it.” Tory explained. “I can now proudly tell you that the TTC has graciously decided not to charge you more money than it already is charging you to ride public transit.” Immediately after the announcement cheers could be heard across the city, along with shouts of “Hurrah!” and jovial renditions of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

News of the TTC receiving the prestigious award attracted international attention as well. The Nelson Mandela Foundation, created to honor the life and legacy of the iconic South African leader who was also formerly awarded the Nobel Prize, congratulated the TTC from it’s official account on Twitter

“Well done, TTC” the foundation wrote. “While our foundation honors the historic accomplishments of the Honorable Nelson Mandela and his contributions towards ending the cruel injustice of apartheid, your contributions to equality, justice, and human rights must be equally recognized and celebrated, given your recent decision to keep the adult fare price at 3.25 during a global pandemic.”

TTC spokesperson Stuart Green told reporters Friday that he was “overwhelmed” by the messages of support and appreciation pouring in from across the country and around the world.

“The immense generosity of the TTC is finally getting the attention it deserves” Green tweeted to Twitter followers.

“Are you happy now, you miserable bastards?” Green asked. “Maybe now you’ll stop whining about overcrowding on buses and the lack of masks.”
